‘A Plus’ All Round

December 9, 2007

It’s easy to slag the NHS, but yesterday, it was A+

Sorry for the delay on the Christmas decorations post, I spent most of yesterday down at A+E with mum,

It was a different hospital and a contrast to the last time, the experience (although time consuming) was from beginning to end delivered with, care and consideration, A plus grades go to

Community Warden service, who mum can summon 24/7 at the press of a button and who called the ambulance,

Ambulance, usual blend of dignity preserving humour and professionalism (we expect no less!)

A+E who did all they could as swiftly as they could, the department had that concentrated ‘hum’ of activity, that comes with pressure well managed; as well as a waiting room that was chocka block with the walking wounded, there were plenty of ‘proper poorly’ people being wheeled in the back door.

I was a little concerned when we were dispatched to the Medical Admissions Unit, to wait for the results of mums blood test, the last time I poked a toe in that place, it like entering cross between Pandora’s box and Bedlam, but we were put in a side room, of the brand-spanking new unit, (my worry was that here, we would be out of sight and out of mind) to my surprise we both got tea and sandwiches, and the A+E consultant arrived with a large sticker on his arm; it was placed there by the doctor who had been looking after mum, and who had now gone off shift, the sticker was to remind him mum was still waiting, (I so need a sticker system!) he explained mums results and that they were happy she went home, with a follow up appointment, for Tuesday.

He took the time to show me easiest way to get mum to the car, he bounded along the corridor with me tagging along behind,I thought it maybe not the most effective use of his time, but maybe he wanted a quick blast of fresh air in the midst of a manic shift, but there was, never the less something of the ‘The Green Wing’ about him

The only B- goes to the path lab, who miss-placed the ‘bloods’ this added about an hour and a half to our stay.

Got mum home cleaned up the after-math, of the mornings hasty departure, called up the warden service to say she was back home, job done.

Whilst we are in medical mode,Tom Reynolds, over at Random Acts of Reality, is looking for a name for his new book, there are goodies to be won.

  1. Glad your mums okay.

  2. [...] things, how do other people manage their diaries? If I try the sticker on the sleeve method I mentioned here, I would end up so smothered in ‘Post-it’  notes I would end up looking like a [...]

  3. Thanks KM,
I now realise the reason we were shuffled off to the MAU, was that the time constraint of ‘no more than ‘four hours’ in A+E’ was approaching

  4. It’s brilliant when they get it right, although the problem then becomes “why can’t it happen more often”?

Anyway, it’s good to hear that everything turned out well.
