Clowning around
July 12, 2008
Carnival day and so many colourful photo opportunities, Tom and I noticed how the people make an assumption that if you have a long lens on your camera, you must some how be, ‘professional’ and know what you are doing, in this case it was me that was clowning around the perception wasn’t the reality. But people certainly played up for the camera and we had a lot of fun.
On my Flickr site I put my ’squared circle’ photographs, in a ‘pool’, with other peoples ’squared circle’ photographs, the idea being you take a photo of something circular and crop it into a square; yes I know there is no end to the strange things people do on the Internet, and I do think sometimes that this pool is where all the train spotters went after they were cleared off the platforms, as some people seem very keen on collecting photographs of numbers, but it’s just a bit of fun, that makes you think, well occasionally in my case, about how you compose a photo (I never even saw the circle in this photo until I downloaded it, it’s not perfectly round, so maybe it will get rejected by the administrator, but I like the shot anyway
No words now just photographs.

Perhaps they thought you as the local reporter from the gazette or something
wasnt there a carnival queen ?
nice bright pictures
You are too modest about your skills as a photographer. As I have said before you should be getting paid for this work! It’s _really_ wonderful and your subjects were lucky you turned your long lens at them. Ping-pong ball neck gets my vote for “most fetching.” (I am among that noisy majority who finds clowns creepy. These little ones are saved by their extreme youth from the creepy factor. Grown men in clown gear, well…) Thanks for sharing.
Lovely photos - I must investigate that Flickr website.
Perhaps i should run a fell race dressed as a clown. Its true though somehow clowns remind me of eighties horror films. The lens is def earning its money for sure. I will have a look at Flickr as well
What lovely portraits, and so beautifully compiled. The black beauty queen and the Thai girl look glorious. We’ve never had such a multicultural carnival as this where we live, nearer though we are to a city. And I thought that where you live was supposed to be the ‘white highlands’.
I’m off to look at those circles on Flickr now. Your circle pictures are amongst my favourite of your work. Or oeuvre, should I be saying now?
