Goose

July 16, 2008

Blue and orange, complimentary colours, how could they fail to be pleasing on the eye.

goose 1

A handsome family, although the parents were a little hissy if you got too close, geese can be aggressive and are sometimes used to guard property, on the Hebridean Island of Islay, they protect the distilleries, I feel sure McNoddy would approve

goose 2

these domesticated geese were very much part and parcel of the small holding, but large flocks of wild geese can be a nuisance, in the USA you can call in the Geese police to deal with them, Moss the dog would consider this as a good career move.

Goose chick

On the subject of baby birds, Tom Reynolds, has his own little fluffy pigeon chicks to deal with are they cute or vermin? depends on your perspective I suppose and whether or not you have to clean up the poo.

  1. Love your blog and photos - keep them coming!

  2. An interesting entry, and great photos. Living in Canada, I was interested to read about The Geese Police which I had never heard of. Checking their site, I see that they are based in the United States ~ of course, Canada Geese seem to be everywhere!

  3. Apologies Glo, I typo on my part, I shall edit, I had been Googling around with Canada geese and rushing to finish the post before a dental appointment :( I was a bit distracted.
They do indeed ‘get every where’ near us, they seem very fond of the local golf course

  4. It’s hard not to think “awwww” when I look at the baby geese. Wonderful pictures.

I’m going to look into the Geese Police. We need some around here. We spend a good part of the spring and early summer harassing the Canada geese that show up in huge flocks, wanting to settle here. A few would be ok, but they always bring a couple hundred of their nearest and dearest with them. They leave far too many “nutrients” (poo) for the pond to remain healthy if we let them stay.

  5. I am just catching up on your last few posts. Your blog has become a near-daily must-visit for me it is truly wonderful! And I don’t say that about just anything. I try to limit myself to two exclamation points a year, so I hope you will take it for the high praise that it is meant to be. The geese photos, as usual, are fabulous and I _love_ those cricket pictures and the “backstory” on Granny’s history with the game.

Every time I look at your blog I think how much I admire the photo that serves as the banner. Can you pinpoint that location for us? If I ever manage to get back to England I definitely want to get to the north and see some of the beautiful places you photograph. Cheers.

  6. I dunno why but I thought of Xmas……

  7. Geese certainly make great guards for a property. They are something else to watch when hords fly over honking towards their destination.

I love the last photo. :)

  8. Hi Kim, the view is taken from the garden! How lucky am I! (and thats a years quota of exclamation marks)

    Tasty Noddy, very very tasty.

  9. They certainly can be nasty, a bit like swans even if you try to get near there youngsters.
