Watching nature take its course, from the top of a hill in northern England

Raw Wind, little snow, lots of ice.

Not much more than a dusting of snow, but it is a very cold wind and there is a lot of ice in the lane.

A rather timid tap at the front door, brought a some what sheepish friend seeking assistance, they had got their car stuck on the ice, armed with shovels and salt,Tom and I went to give him a hand. I did think with his local knowledge, that he should have been aware that ‘our lane’ was not the best idea of a short cut, but I bit my lip

Ice, lane

The local farmer who turned up in his bright red tractor, was more straight talking,

‘Ya daft bugger, what did ya set off down ‘ere for?

My thoughts exactly!

Watching the rhythm of rural life, from the top of a hill in northern England. Having spent most of my life avoiding writing, I now need to do it! I am no domestic goddess, but if I were expecting visitors to my home, I would whisk round with the duster and plump up the cushions and generally make the place look presentable. I hope that by putting my words where others may see them it will encourage me to ‘tidy up and push the Hoover around’ my writing. On the other hand I may just be adding to the compost heap. Only time will tell! Pull up a chair, sit yourself down, I’ll put the kettle on.

  1. I can just hear those words coming out of our local farmer’s mouth, and he was right too. I’m just not sure I could have said it quite so eloquently!

  2. You could go lugeing down that!

  3. Best place for ice is in a glass with a slice and some gin & tonic! Ruralshire is freezing, dark and snowy at the moment. Bah humbug.

  4. Our stranded motorist returned later in the day (by a different route) with a box of chocolate biscuits and a bottle of wine by way of thanks; Tom now sees a business opportunity in ‘vehicle recovery’, suggesting we fix a winch to the gate post, I had best go hide the tea trays before he starts hiring them out for the luge.
Gadget, do your team get nice ‘Soviet style’ warm fur hats for the foul weather? Our police do, well maybe they only have one to share between three, but you do see them, occasionally.

  5. I suspect it is unofficial uniform – which means that, naturally, I approve!!

  6. Love that photo.

    Happy New Year!
