Thou Shall Not Covert

Thy neighbours chickens.

Our neighbours have some new hens, a breed called Bluebelles, they are a rather lovely shade of gun metal grey, very pretty.

They weren’t up for having their photos taken, they are a little timid, with me at any rate (unlike ours, who are such brazen hussies that it’s difficult to get far enough away from them to get them in focus)

The bluebelles are quite chatty, with a very sweet voice,

I think we might have to have a couple.

  1. You have helped me solve a problem! We have seen some lovely hens pecking around and about in our village. They wander through many gardens and I have asked a few people what breed they are and nobody knows – but now I do! I agree they are really a lovely colour – I wonder if they lay well?

  2. If a chicken can be pretty, they are quite pretty! Actually my f-i-l had some bantys that liked to land on my head that were quite pretty. 😉

Banty hens was once very popular around here when i was little.

These bluebelles are very beautiful. My mom has a couple of banty’s that are a bit this color, but they are cross breeds. This post made me laugh again, your description of your hens was very funny! And then the picture of your hen matched so well, what a great expression!

I’ve got 4 of these, fell in love with the colour at an auction so went out and sourced some from a breeder, they’re fantastic layers, being a hybrid from the RIR’s and ours haven’t stopped laying all winter!!!! very pleased with them, so pleased we’re buying a few more 🙂

just bought bluebelles as our last ex-bat died of old age last night, and our one point of lay looked very forlorn! what a beautiful colour!

The Bluebelle is actually a hybrid bred from a Maran and Rhode Island Red, and they lay as well as any other hybrid – around 250 a year. The closest looking pure breed would be a Blue Orpington, which will only lay around 180-200 eggs per year but are also good eaters, being an old utility breed. They’re both gorgeous though 🙂
