Watching nature take its course, from the top of a hill in northern England

White Van Man Speaks

The view from our doorstep at the moment is just delicious, just so tasty you could eat it with a spoon. When a courier arrived with a parcel the other day, he was quite overcome by its beauty, now couriers are not often moved to speak, you are lucky to get more than ‘Sign here’, ‘Do you know how long it’s taken me to find this place?’ or ‘Have you fastened that dog up?’ but this particular courier was obviously feeling very patriotic and nostalgic for our green and pleasant land.

‘This’ he announced, sweeping an arm across the vista, ‘this view, is why Churchill said we would fight them on the beaches.’

Summer view

I can see where he is coming from, I feel rather precious about this view myself. The full quote is,

We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.
Winston Churchill

Watching the rhythm of rural life, from the top of a hill in northern England. Having spent most of my life avoiding writing, I now need to do it! I am no domestic goddess, but if I were expecting visitors to my home, I would whisk round with the duster and plump up the cushions and generally make the place look presentable. I hope that by putting my words where others may see them it will encourage me to ‘tidy up and push the Hoover around’ my writing. On the other hand I may just be adding to the compost heap. Only time will tell! Pull up a chair, sit yourself down, I’ll put the kettle on.

  1. It certainly is a wonderful view! xx

  2. You are right to feel precious about your stunning views – and what a beautiful spot for a courier to deliver to. I guess it made a lovely change for him from urban deliveries..

  3. Great Pics, liked the Winston quote.

  4. That photo definitely reveals land worth fighting for! What a gorgeous vista.

  5. You do live in some beautiful land. I would love to have that view out my doorstep.

  6. I wonder if the courier ate his lunch by the pond
    Its a lovely spot indeed

  7. I absolutely agree with your courier and I’m impressed that he actually noticed and remarked on it – and that he knew the quote from Churchill’s wartime speech. It really is a beautiful view.

  8. Not surprising that couriers would be noticing sorts or that they’d have time for reflection on the long drive up a lane, but they aren’t a chatty bunch. It took a truly spectacular day to move White Van Man to speech–and a truly delicious view. Thanks for sharing it.

Come on, join in.
