White Wash

It seems a tad voyeuristic to be posting photos of other peoples laundry on the Internet (and I’ve done it before) but this line of washing was certainly not dirty laundry, as Joe noted ‘Wow, that is white washing!’ they are indeed whites to be proud of and what a view.

I suspect washing has been hung out here, just like this, for a very very long time. For me it was a flash back to my childhood, the ‘Service twin tub’ pulled into  the middle of the kitchen on a Monday morning and the ‘boil-wash,’ knickers, vests, hankies in a steaming broth of Persil, long before biological washing powders and automatic washing machines.

White Wash

In northern England circa 1969, wash day was something of a ritual, the day and the routine were not to be messed with and old habits die hard, looking at the photo above brings to mind, that even to this day, my octogenarian  mum can’t bare for me hang out washing on the line for her, apparently I just don’t do it right, I don’t peg in the right order or in the right places, these things matter.

  1. These are, first, wonderfully evocative photos, and I see that you snuck in a wall . . . They took me back to childhood, too, and this is one of those days when I wish I could stay there, Gram and Mom doing all the work while I got in the way. Such a beautiful view. Never any question in my mind which blog neighbor I’m visiting when I drop in here!

  2. I love laundry on the line (partly the reason for the name of my blog) and I, like your mum, am extremely particular about it – no-one else does it properly.

  3. I love to see a line of washing flapping in the breeze, I still hang mine outside if I possibly can. I remember the days of starch and Dolly blue. My DH’s Auntie Em was renowned for her skill with these, her washing was always beautifully white and starched and crisply ironed.

Yes I to cannot hang our laundry out correctly. I forget to wipe the line every time. Does anyone else forget to wipe the line.
Cant quite remember back that far but remember the gigantic box of Persil or Daz Automatic . It was huge and I remember making things out of it when it was finally emptied.

But now here is a question
WHY OH WHY DOES WASHING POWDER GET IMPROVED EVERY WEEK
Everytime the advert comes on its been improved ?????.

I mean how much better can it get.

Oh and does anyone Darn there socks anymore. Def remember that

I love the smell of laundry dried out in the sun–I even liked the diapers I used to fold. Alas, I now live in a strata townhouse (row house) complex, with rules that say “No clothes-drying in back yards!” Everything must look uniform, don’t you know?

Lovely photos! You live in a beautiful place.

I can almost smell the crisp scent of laundry dried on a line from days gone by. We should all do it more often to reduce our use of electricity.
